REVIEWS

Local Reviewers

The play's subject matter will be too raw and gut-wrenching for some, and the expletive count is high. But this gripping piece is a whirlwind ride that avid theatergoers will want to experience.

Gruesome and repulsive... the most repulsive, disgusting, reprehensible piece of garbage possible... sick... no redeeming features whatsoever.

Four stars. Some of the best—and certainly the most challenging—writing we've seen on stage all season...crackle[s] with suspense and no small amount of wit.

This season's most exciting and original new play.

The best play of the season... examining how the redeeming and restorative powers of love and creativity can mitigate or be undone by darker impulses.

(Responses from our audiences)

Lynne writes:
Pillowman never "drags" thru its nearly 3 hours. I've been eager to see this play since its huge success in NY.

Great theater raises confounding questions which we all must deal with. Pillowman is particularly relevant in this era of totalitarian governments, their apparent dissolution sometimes, and our own disappearing Bill of Rights, along with our frequent personal self-righteousness when confronted with government misuse/abuse.

Jay O'Berski was phenomenal in his facial, postural, and vocal representation of the many frames of mind he must demonstrate, and the other actors were equally impressive. The staging was interesting, engaging, and sometimes comic, which reflected the tone of the drama.

Thank you, Manbites Dog Theater, for bringing this great play and great performance to the Triangle/Durham.

I'm not sure what all the hubub is about..."repulsive"? "Gruesome"? Reminded me of just another Thanksgiving with the folks.

Whatever.
