The Open Eye Crew presents
Songs & Scenes from SAM/SARA
a showcase premiere
with songs by Tom Maxwell & story by John Justice
A tuneful, fun-filled meditation on human appetite, suffering, and kindness
July 7, 8, 9, 2005
The story is simple and blunt. It’s set in a mountain wilderness right after the turn of the 20th century. Sara plays a reckless joke on her lover Sam. He responds with a cruel joke of his own. As a consequence, Sara must do penance to be released from her suffering, and Sam is driven to searching long years for Sara while he practices kindness and sings in a wilderness dive. Enslaved strippers, murderous inn-keepers, cursed farms, and suicidal rustics complicate things.
The 80-minute Showcase at Manbites Dog is constructed around a brilliant group of songs by Tom Maxwell: “The Will of Heaven,” “Four Mountains,” “You Always Get What’s Coming,” “Samsara.” Maxwell, from Pittsboro, is a former member of the Squirrel Nut Zippers, for whom he wrote the hits “Hell” and “Put a Lid on It.”
SAM/SARA is directed by David Beckmann, who directed PIPPIN and other works for Durham’s Hoof and Horn. The book is by Chapel Hill’s John Justice (TWO SAMS for Shakespeare & Originals, and adaptations of Clyde Edgerton’s RANEY and WALKING ACROSS EGYPT.)
